Aurora Australis – Southern Lights…..
The Ultimate Diva of the Night Sky…..
NO TOUR DEPARTURES. A sighting of the Aurora Australis Southern Lights have eluded Bushie for 27 years. On the morning 2nd January 2025 at 1.30 am, on returning home form a Freycinet tour drop-off, Bushie finally got one of the most awe-inspiring moments – witnessing the Aurora Australis — the Southern Lights — dancing across the Tasmanian night sky. Passing some unusually parked vehicles at Legerwood, including the local constabulary, alerted Bushie to something new, and there they were. Unlike its northern counterpart, this ethereal display of the Southern Lights is a hidden gem of the Southern Hemisphere, seen only under the right conditions.
Bushie – The Keeper of Wild Secrets
Pepper Bush Adventures’ legendary guide, “Bushie,” has been the heart and soul of unforgettable Tasmanian wilderness experiences. With a deep-rooted connection to the land and an encyclopaedic knowledge of its flora, fauna, and stories, Bushie has led countless night tours through Tasmania’s rugged bushland, returning late into the evening with guests exhilarated by the magic of the wild. His seasoned eyes have spotted elusive nocturnal creatures under the glow of the moon, his stories have brought landscapes to life, and his passion for the natural world has inspired wonder in all who walk beside him.
Each return from a late-night tour holds the promise of wildlife sightings, starlit skies, and tales spun around a warm campfire. Bushie’s calm presence, quick wit, and instinctual tracking skills make him more than a guide — he’s a keeper of wild secrets and a bridge between people and place. His decades of experience and deep love for Tasmania’s wilderness ensure that every Pepper Bush Adventures tour is personal, profound, and potentially extraordinary. Whether guests encounter the glow of possums in the treetops or the roadside nightlife discoveries, Bushie’s guiding hand turns every night into an adventure worth remembering.
A Rare Southern Treat
The Southern Lights — or Aurora Australis if you’re feeling fancy — are the ultimate diva of the night sky. She doesn’t check the forecast, doesn’t RSVP, and definitely doesn’t show up on command. But when she does make an appearance? Oh boy, she owns the sky. Picture this: ribbons of neon green, hot pink, and purple lazily shimmying across the stars like nature’s own nightclub. No lasers, no DJ — just Earth showing off in absolute silence.
Unlike her overexposed cousin up north (you know, the one plastered all over travel brochures), the Southern Lights are a rare southern treat — no crowds, no hype, just you, the wilderness, and the chance of a cosmic surprise. You might spend the night spotting wombats and sipping billy tea when BAM — the sky explodes in colour like it’s had a few too many espressos.
Catching the Aurora Australis is part science, part luck, and pure magic. She’s moody, unpredictable, and 100% worth the wait. So grab your beanie, rug up, and head south — way south. Because down here, when the lights come out to play, you’ll swear the universe is throwing you a cheeky wink from beyond the stars.
